Jen grew up in Gardner, Kansas. She earned her bachelor's degree in Linguistics (with a German minor) from the University of Iowa, as well as her master's in Linguistics with a TESL emphasis. In addition to serving as the Department Testing Coordinator, she teaches in the Iowa Intensive English Program and Teaching Assistant Preparation in English program.

Prior to becoming a University of Iowa faculty member, Ryan spent a year abroad teaching English as a Foreign Language in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Wuhan, China.
