ESL Programs provides individual tutoring for the University of Iowa in its English Language Center. ESL Faculty and Teaching Assistants offer 30-minute or 45-minute sessions for English language support in:

  • Speaking - presentations, classroom discussions, informal conversation, pronunciation
  • Writing - interpreting assignments, language selection, organization, editing
  • Listening - skills for understanding classmates or formal presentations, note-taking skills
  • Grammar and Vocabulary - understanding and producing a variety of structures and words
  • Reading  - skills for understanding different types of texts, annotating readings
  • Other - study skills, US culture

To help guide the tutor, we ask that participants bring questions, assignments, projects, presentations, or anything else on which they would like to improve their English language skills. Please bring instructions, if applicable (e.g. a paper assigned by an instructor).

These sessions are in high demand. Please be mindful when booking an appointment.  If you are unable to attend your booked appointment, please cancel the appointment in Microsoft Bookings or contact the tutor before your scheduled appointment. If a participant is signed up for and does not attend two ELC appointments without contacting the tutor beforehand, they will not be allowed to book appointments for one month.

Register for an ELC tutoring appointment via Microsoft Bookings.
