Free ESL Classes for Community Members - Spring 2022

Free classes in English as a Second Language will be offered to members of the community.  Classes will concentrate on speaking and listening activities, and help with other aspects of English will also be available.  The classes are in person, not online.  The classes are approximately 1 hour.  Speakers of all ability levels are welcome.  Please note that no daycare will be provided.

When:  Monday through Thursday (mornings and afternoons) - Beginning March 21 through Thursday, May 5

Where:  University of Iowa (room will be given to all registrants)

Taught by:  University of Iowa students who are completing their specialized training in ESL

Communication Skills for Professionals

This course is designed to improve the listening and speaking skills of international professionals at the UI (visiting scholars, post-docs, researchers). The class gives participants the opportunity not only to attain greater conversational fluency, but also to practice language needed for professional interactions such as discussions and presentations.

Please note that we are not able to issue immigration documents for this course.

Date: January to May, May to July, or August to December
Because this course depends upon enrollment and teacher availability, it may not be offered every semester. Please check with the ESL Programs Office to find out when it may be offered next.

Time: 4:30-5:20 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Cost: Tuition is $1,070 for a 16-week session, $580 for an 8-week session. The University also requires student fees including: technology fee, student services fee, activities fee, student union fee, building fee, and recreational facilities fee which total $313.25. If you are enrolled in other University classes, then you are already paying these fees and will only need to pay the tuition fee.

To Apply:

  1. Complete an application.
  2. Bring the application and a check for the $100 non-refundable tuition deposit to the ESL Programs Office. (If your department will sponsor you, please submit a Departmental Payment Form; in this case, a tuition deposit is not required.)
  3. We will contact you near the beginning of the semester to tell you the location of your class and the name of your teacher.
